Bangladesh will avoid playing its T20 World Cup matches in India due to security concerns
Bangladesh will not play its T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India due to concerns over player safety, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced, following the removal of a senior Bangladeshi cricketer from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Amid escalating political tensions between the two neighbors, the BCB said it has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka. The board also sought clarification over fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman’s sudden release from the IPL, according to a statement issued on Sunday.
The decision was taken after an emergency meeting of the BCB board of directors, convened shortly after Mustafizur was dropped from the IPL squad.
“After a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India, and in line with guidance from the Bangladesh government, the board has resolved that the national team will not travel to India for the tournament under the present conditions,” the statement said.
The board added that the move was necessary to protect the wellbeing of players, team officials, and other stakeholders, and urged the ICC to take prompt action to ensure Bangladesh can participate in a secure environment.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s sports adviser Asif Nazrul criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for instructing the release of Mustafizur from the IPL, arguing that the decision raised serious concerns about the safety of Bangladeshi players in India.
“If a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India, then the national team cannot feel safe travelling there for a World Cup,” Nazrul said in a social media post. He later welcomed the BCB’s request to move matches to Sri Lanka, describing it as a necessary response to what he termed discriminatory policies.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Bangladesh are currently slated to play all their group-stage matches in India, including three games at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and one at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
If the ICC approves the request, Bangladesh would become the second team to have its matches moved out of India. Pakistan’s games are already set to be played in Sri Lanka under an existing ICC agreement between the two rivals.
The controversy has unfolded against a backdrop of deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh, with recent communal violence and political disputes spilling over into sport. Several bilateral cricket tours have already been postponed, and the IPL decision has sparked public backlash in Bangladesh, including calls for a broadcast boycott of the tournament.
